PRESENTATIONS

  • Beyond sexual function: Facilitating embodiment and sexual wellbeing for patients pursuing and postoperative genital surgery

Description: Discussions of pre- and post- operative care for patients pursuing genital surgery (vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty) often center sexual and urinary function, including normative ideas of sex and sexuality such as vaginal depth, penile size, STI risk, and so on. While these are important topics that we will touch on during this workshop, we will additionally discuss how clinicians who are caring for patients pre- and postoperative genital surgery can help facilitate reflective decision-making and provide sensitive and respectful trauma-informed care before and after surgery. We will discuss current evidence and recommendations for providers caring for patients before and after genital surgery, and identify gaps in these recommendations. We will then help fill in the gaps so that workshop attendees feel better prepared to care for genital surgery patients. The information shared will be informed by and include empirical data from published academic literature, as well as unpublished analyses from an NIH-funded Trans Masculine Health Survey.

  • Phalloplasty & Metoidioplasty A-to-D

Description: Despite increased access to genital surgery itself, and information about it, community members and medical providers alike continue to repeat myths and misconceptions about metoidioplasty and phalloplasty. This workshop aims to do some mythbusting and contribute current, concrete information and resources on surgery through empirical data and evidence from academic literature, as well as anecdotal and lived community member experiences and peer support resources.

We will discuss surgical information and techniques, provide tips on pre- and postop care and surgery navigation, and touch on long-term embodiment and integration after surgery.

This workshop is open to everyone 18 years of age and older who feel capable of engaging in a workshop on an emotionally-loaded topic and are able to respect individual differences in identity and transition-related interventions. This workshop will include illustrations, images, and discussions of genitals.

  • Beyond sexual function: Embodiment and wellbeing after genital surgery

Description: It is common for discussions of genital surgery (vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty) to focus on normative ideas of sex and sexuality, such as vaginal depth, penile size, STI risk, and so on. While these are important topics that we will touch on during this workshop, we will additionally discuss how people who have undergone genital surgery can feel more embodied, or connected to their bodies and sexuality, regardless of when they have had surgery. This workshop will also be helpful for people pursuing genital surgery, as they can apply the concepts learned to their postoperative recovery and long-term embodiment process.

We will illustrate this process and provide concrete information on how individuals can work toward and navigate embodiment and sexual wellbeing throughout the surgical timeline, with regard to both one’s own connection to their body, as well as how others may relate to and interact with their body. The information shared will be informed by and include empirical data from published academic literature, as well as unpublished analyses from the NIH-funded Trans Masculine Health Survey.
